Is there ever a negative reaction to taking flower essences?

Depends on how you look at it! Some essences are said to be catalysts or openers, i.e. Holly and Wild Oat and Star of Bethlehem. As they are taken they will focus out the underlying difficulty and show you the real reason for the difficulty, which may be temporarily uncomfortable. Often our true feelings get hidden away, and not acknowledged, but they must be dealt with in order for us to move on and heal. This is called an awareness crisis, and once it is clear what the problem is, a suitable remedy can be chosen to help with it. Sometimes the  opener itself will quickly transform the energy positively. This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does most people welcome it, and understand what is happening, particularly as it seems to happen more to people using the remedies for personal growth.  The suggestion is to stop taking the remedy and have some Emergency Essence until things improve, and then go back to the treatment bottle. Ian White of the Australian Bush Flowers suggests taking more of the treatment bottle, I suspect to push through the awareness crisis more quickly.

 Giving an essence without knowledge.

This is a hot potato and there are many points of view and no easy answer. Some call it an act of love, and if you are caring for someone who is distressed, and they are your responsibility a child for example, then flower essences can be of great benefit. But from another point of view it could be seen as a form of  control, and an invasion of a person’s choice and privacy. The motive might also be to change another person to suit you, which is hardly loving. I leave it to you to make up your own mind.

How can alcoholics take flower remedies?

As there is brandy in flower essences, so they do not seem to be a good choice for alcoholics. You can however add cider apple vinegar as a preservative in your dosage, and then add the drops to a teaspoonful of boiling water to evaporate any remaining alcohol in the dose. You can also add drops straight from the stock bottle to the hot water.
